KARACHI  Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has inaugurated a dedicated women-only Pink Bus service running on the Green Line BRT corridor. The route now links Numaish to Surjani Town, offering safe and free travel exclusively for female commuters.

Speaking at the launch, Memon said the transport department is committed to improving travel facilities across the province, particularly for women. He also announced that the pink fleet will soon extend to the Edhi Orange Line BRT, further strengthening women’s access to public transport.  https://x.com/htnworld/status/1992148984979439849?s=20

Inclusive Transport for All

To support differently-abled community members, Memon revealed plans for special bikes for children with disabilities, which will be provided free of charge. In another major move, the Sindh government is readying double-decker buses for use on key city routes, including Shahrah-e-Faisal, to expand the capacity of public transport.

Background and Policy Push

This initiative is part of a wider push by the Sindh Cabinet to modernize public transport. Earlier this year, officials approved pink electric motorcycles for women, electric buses, and double-decker buses under a comprehensive urban mobility plan. Memon emphasized that the women-only buses are not simply a transport project, but a step toward women’s empowerment, enabling greater freedom to travel for work, education, and daily life.

Critics & Public Response

While many have welcomed the development, some analysts note the challenges ahead: maintaining safety, ensuring reliable frequency, and scaling up the service efficiently will test the government’s capacity. Others argue that extending similar services to more BRT lines is essential to truly make public transit gender-inclusive.

Future Mobility Vision

Memon’s transport roadmap also includes electric buses, EV motorcycles, and further infrastructure expansion. These steps are part of the Sindh government’s broader ambition to modernize public transit and make Karachi more accessible and sustainable.
