MELBOURNE — The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) has strongly condemned a religiously motivated attack on an Imam and his wife in Victoria on 10 January 2026. The incident involved Islamophobic abuse escalating into assault, threats, and damage to the couple’s vehicle.

The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) emphasized that Islamophobia must be treated as a hate crime with the same seriousness as antisemitism and other forms of racism. Violence against Muslims is targeted religious hatred, not random disorder, and perpetrators must be prosecuted under the law.

Equal Protection and Legal Accountability Required

Authorities must ensure equal protection under law, with no hierarchy of victims or selective outrage. Political and media narratives that normalize suspicion against Muslims create permissive environments for violence, according to the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC).

The council also stressed that conflating peaceful advocacy with terrorism fuels scapegoating and increases risk for visibly Muslim communities. The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) called for consistent recording, transparent reporting, and swift prosecution of offenders to deter future attacks.

Global Condemnation as Civic Responsibility

The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC)’s condemnation sets an example of responsible leadership. The council urged the global community to condemn anti-Muslim hate as firmly as all other forms of prejudice and extremist violence, promoting civic responsibility and solidarity with Muslim communities.
