Peshawar: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Anti-Corruption Circle in Peshawar has successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle fake Pakistani currency, arresting two suspects in a major operation and demonstrating the government’s ongoing commitment to financial security and law enforcement.

According to an FIA spokesperson, the arrested individuals, Abdul Wahab and Saifullah, were apprehended in Peshawar while attempting to circulate counterfeit notes. A total of Rs 1.435 million in fake currency was recovered, along with a pistol and the vehicle used in the operation, now seized by authorities.

The FIA spokesperson emphasized that this operation reflects the continued vigilance of Pakistani law enforcement agencies against financial crimes that threaten national stability. “This action demonstrates the government’s zero-tolerance approach toward criminal networks involved in counterfeiting, and ensures the safety and trust of the Pakistani public,” the spokesperson added.

Historical Context of Counterfeit Currency in Pakistan

Counterfeit currency has historically posed a significant challenge to Pakistan’s financial system, undermining public trust and facilitating criminal activities. In recent years, the government has intensified operations, establishing specialized anti-corruption and financial crime units under the FIA to combat such threats. These measures have included enhanced surveillance, cross-border coordination, and swift legal action against offenders.

Strengthening Financial Security and National Oversight

The FIA confirmed that further investigations are ongoing to dismantle the broader network behind this smuggling attempt. Multiple raids are being conducted across Peshawar and surrounding regions to apprehend other members involved in circulating counterfeit notes. Authorities reiterated that combating such networks is essential to maintaining economic stability and upholding the rule of law.

This operation reinforces Pakistan’s ongoing commitment to strengthening financial security, protecting citizens, and ensuring that criminal activities face firm government action, highlighting the efficiency of coordinated law enforcement efforts in the country.
