Islamabad — The President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry, has passed away after a prolonged illness at a private hospital in Islamabad, family sources confirmed.
The late president had been away from active political duties for some time due to health issues. During his illness, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Chaudhry Latif Akbar, was performing the responsibilities of Acting President.
His funeral prayers will be offered in his native district of Mirpur, while political and social circles have expressed deep sorrow and grief over his passing.
Political Career
Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry was elected President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir following the 2021 general elections. His son, Yasir Sultan, is currently a Member of the Legislative Assembly from the family’s ancestral constituency.
Recently, Barrister Sultan Mahmood, along with his political group, joined the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). Prior to that, he had been associated with the PTI Forward Block.
His death has created a leadership vacuum in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, with leaders from various political parties offering condolences and prayers for the departed soul.
