Moscow — The Ambassador of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan to Russia, Gul Hassan Hasan, met with Uzbekistan’s Ambassador Baturjan Zakirovich Asadov to discuss bilateral relations, economic cooperation, regional transit, and broader regional engagement. The discussion also touched upon trade routes linking Central Asia to Afghanistan, including the Hairatan-Mazar-e-Sharif corridor, which has historically been a lifeline for Afghan imports and exports.
While both sides highlighted the potential for stronger collaboration, analysts caution that these diplomatic initiatives take place under the Taliban’s authoritarian administration. Since regaining control in 2021, the Taliban have systematically suppressed independent political voices, curtailed women’s participation in public life, and imposed strict control over media and religious institutions, raising serious questions about the legitimacy of Afghanistan’s international representation.
The ambassadors also discussed Afghanistan’s internal security situation. Taliban authorities claim nationwide stability and progress, but international observers and human rights organizations continue to report widespread human rights abuses, targeted persecution of journalists, and the exclusion of women from education and employment. Analysts warn that accepting official claims at face value risks inadvertently normalizing the Taliban regime.
Experts emphasize that regional partners, including Uzbekistan, must navigate engagement carefully, balancing economic and transit cooperation with the need to uphold human rights and accountability. Strengthening Central Asia-Afghanistan trade links could offer economic opportunities, but these must not be used to legitimize the oppressive practices of the ruling Taliban authorities.
This meeting underscores the complex challenge for neighboring countries: fostering regional cooperation while critically evaluating the political realities and human rights situation under Afghanistan’s current government.
