Faizabad: The situation in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province has become highly tense after a local Taliban commander reportedly broke away and announced a rebellion. This development has raised fears of a possible armed clash between Taliban forces and a local rebel group.

The situation is being seen as a serious security challenge for the Taliban leadership in the region.

Armed Group Forms After Commander Defects

According to reports, a commander named Zabat Karim from Darah Khastek area has defected with a group of around 30 armed men. After the split, the group moved towards the mountainous regions. Some local Taliban fighters stationed in the area have also reportedly joined the rebellion.

In addition, the rebel commander strongly criticized Taliban policies in his statement. He claimed that local resources are being exploited and the land is being damaged. He also questioned the presence of forces from Helmand and Kandahar, saying they are entering Badakhshan homes under the excuse of removing narcotics crops.

Rising Military Activity and Fear of Clashes

Following the rebellion, Taliban forces have responded by sending additional troops from the provincial center and nearby districts. Reports suggest that helicopters have also been used to deploy soldiers into the mountainous areas of Darah Khastek.

So far, there is no confirmed direct clash. However, the situation remains highly unstable, and the possibility of heavy fighting is increasing.

Meanwhile, local sources claim that the rebel group may also be receiving support from other dissatisfied commanders in the region.

Growing Uncertainty in a Strategic Region

Badakhshan’s difficult terrain makes the situation more complex. Analysts believe that if local armed groups unite around shared grievances, it could create major challenges for Taliban control in the area.

Notably, this is not the first such incident. In October 2025, another local commander, Abdul Rahman Ammar, also rebelled in the same region but was later detained after being called in under false assurances.

Now, with the latest defection of Zabat Karim, tensions in Badakhshan have reached a critical point, and the region remains on edge.
