KABUL – 14 April: The European Union’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan, Tomas Niklasson, has concluded his mission in the country. In an official post on X (formerly Twitter), Niklasson confirmed that his assignment ended on March 1, 2025. Despite his departure, the EU reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to the Afghan people and its continued engagement in the region.
“On March 1, I completed my assignment as EU special envoy for Afghanistan. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served in this role during a critical time,” Niklasson wrote. He expressed appreciation to Afghan citizens, diplomatic counterparts, and colleagues for their cooperation, friendship, and honest feedback throughout his tenure.
Niklasson’s statement clarified that his departure does not signify a shift in the EU’s Afghanistan policy. He emphasized that the EU would maintain its presence in the country and continue its engagement based on previously agreed Council Conclusions. The policy focus remains rooted in humanitarian aid, human rights advocacy, and regional stability.
Until further notice, Deren Derya, head of the Division for Afghanistan and Pakistan at the European External Action Service (EEAS), will take over the responsibilities of the special envoy. The EU’s strategy remains centered on supporting Afghan civil society, especially women and minorities, and cooperating with international partners to promote peace and security in the region.
