Gwadar – April 17, 2025: Pakistan and China have joined hands to develop a high-tech aquaculture industry in Gwadar, marking a major step toward coastal economic growth. The plan, spearheaded by China’s Overseas Ports Holding Company (COPHC), was presented to Pakistan’s Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry during a meeting in Islamabad.
Gwadar, located in Balochistan, plays a strategic role in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The government and Chinese partners plan to transform the port city into a hub for seafood farming, processing, and exports through the proposed aquaculture project.
COPHC Chairman Yu Bo outlined the project’s goals to build a modern, sustainable aquaculture sector in Gwadar. “This initiative will harness the city’s marine wealth and establish it as a key center for seafood production,” said Minister Chaudhry.
He called the plan a “transformative opportunity” for Pakistan’s coastal regions. According to him, it promises to generate jobs, attract foreign investment, and improve livelihoods in Balochistan.
The high-tech aquaculture industry in Gwadar will focus on farming fish, shrimp, seaweed, crabs, and other marine species. Additionally, the plan includes developing hatcheries and seafood processing units that meet global standards.
“Gwadar’s favorable sea conditions and access to international markets make it ideal for aquaculture expansion,” Chaudhry added. He said that the government is committed to facilitating investors and strengthening Pakistan’s blue economy.
The project aims to boost seafood exports while ensuring food security and marine sustainability. Additionally, with Chinese investment and technology, Pakistan plans to tap into the multibillion-dollar global aquaculture market.
The maritime affairs ministry has reaffirmed its full support for companies establishing operations in Pakistan’s coastal zones. Moreover, the initiative supports Pakistan’s long-term goals to promote sustainable marine practices and strengthen regional economic integration. Experts also believe this collaboration can transform Gwadar into a regional hub for aquaculture innovation.
