The United States has raised serious concerns about the safety of its citizens in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. US officials say Americans in the country face the risk of illegal detention and growing security threats. At the same time, Washington has urged the Taliban to release any detained US citizens without conditions.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Afghanistan under the Taliban has become a place where foreign nationals can be held without proper legal process. According to him, the Taliban are using detained Americans as a way to gain political concessions from the United States. Because of this concern, the US government has renewed its warning that Americans should not travel to Afghanistan.
US Raises Concerns Over Detentions
Rubio stressed that the United States expects the Taliban to immediately and unconditionally release American citizens who may be in their custody. He said holding people for political pressure is unacceptable and increases tensions between the two sides.
Meanwhile, US Assistant Secretary of State Mora Namdar said the situation for Americans in Afghanistan remains dangerous. She explained that despite the Taliban’s claims about stability and safety, the reality on the ground is very different.
According to Namdar, American citizens could face serious security risks if they stay in the country. These include possible detention, limited access to legal protection, and difficulties in receiving help from US authorities.
Travel Warning and Safety Risks
The US State Department has continued its travel restrictions for Afghanistan. Officials strongly advise Americans not to visit the country under current conditions.
In addition, US authorities have asked any American citizens still in Afghanistan to leave as soon as possible. They warned that the security environment remains unstable and unpredictable.
At the same time, the Taliban have tried to promote Afghanistan as a safe destination for visitors. They have also encouraged tourism in recent months. However, US officials say these claims do not match the security situation on the ground.
For Washington, the main concern remains the safety of its citizens and the risk of wrongful detention.
The United States continues to view Afghanistan as unsafe for Americans. US officials are urging citizens to leave the country while pressing the Taliban to release any detained Americans without delay.
