Bajaur – The Grand Jirga of the Salarzai tribe held on 12 August 2025, concluded with a strong call for peace, security, and the removal of militant groups from the region. The meeting, held in Mamund Tehsil, brought together tribal elders, religious scholars, civil officials, and military representatives to address rising security concerns in Bajaur District.
Opening with prayers for local martyrs, the jirga unanimously declared that no extremist elements, locally known as ‘Khawarij,’ will be allowed to operate or find shelter in the area. Attendees voiced serious concerns after videos surfaced showing militants misusing mosques and civilian homes.
The jirga held multiple discussions with local terrorist leaders, urging them to vacate civilian areas. While some militants agreed to relocate, they refused to leave the district entirely, resulting in a deadlock. The jirga emphasized the need for ongoing dialogue and cooperation to ensure lasting peace.
Launch of Operation Sarbakaf to Neutralize Militancy
Notably, Pakistan Army launched ‘Operation Sarbakaf’ on 29 July 2025 targeting militant hideouts in Lowi Mamund Tehsil. Supported by gunship helicopters and artillery, the operation aims to dismantle militant networks and restore security. A three-day curfew in 16 villages sparked protests from locals over the lack of prior consultation with the provincial government. Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur stressed the importance of involving provincial authorities before such operations and announced a series of jirgas starting 2 August to address local concerns.
The Salarzai tribe reaffirmed its commitment to peace during the jirga, stating that no individuals involved in violence or unrest would be sheltered or allowed to disturb peace. Tribal elders stressed unity as crucial to protecting the region from extremism.
Security forces continue intelligence-led operations in Mamund and Lowi Mamund tehsils, coordinating closely with provincial and local administrations to minimize civilian impact.
Displacement and Humanitarian Measures in Bajaur
These ongoing operations have led to significant displacement in Lowi Mamund. The district administration evacuated 107 government schools and colleges to serve as temporary shelters. Additionally, a camp with 450 tents has been established at the Bajaur Sports Complex to accommodate displaced families. Security officials vowed to continue operations until all militants are eliminated.
Local communities and tribal elders have shown strong support for security forces’ efforts, reinforcing cooperation in the fight against militancy.
Official sources confirm militants remain active in Mamund and Lowi Mamund, with intelligence-based operations ongoing. Authorities have taken measures to ensure public convenience during these actions.
Nationwide, Pakistani security forces conduct approximately 200 intelligence-based operations daily. The unified stance of the Salarzai tribe jirga complements these efforts, signaling a strong commitment to peace and stability in Bajaur until the complete elimination of anti-state elements.
