Local reports indicate that the crash happened in the Arghandi area, just outside Kabul. The bus was on a long haul from Kandahar to the capital when the driver lost control.
The vehicle veered off the paved road and rolled onto a steep, rocky incline, resulting in a violent overturn. The impact mangled the bus’s metal frame, clearly showing just how severe the crash was.
On-Site Response and Rising Toll
Photos from the crash site that surfaced shortly after the incident portrayed the bus lying crumpled on its side. The scene was chaotic, with Taliban officials and residents joining forces in an attempt to retrieve bodies trapped in the wreckage and help the injured.
Ground sources have indicated that the current death toll of 26 might increase, as many of the injured were reported to be in critical condition. They’ve been taken to nearby hospitals where medical professionals are trying to save lives amid the chaos.
Poor Road Conditions
The Kabul-Kandahar highway, a crucial route for trade and travel, has gained a bad reputation for these incidents. Its long, often poorly lit, and badly maintained stretches make it a place where speeding and distractions can lead to disastrous outcomes.
Just last week, another horrific crash in Herat province claimed the lives of 81 people. The close timing of these two tragedies starkly illustrates the everyday risks faced by Afghans simply trying to travel from city to city.
The alarming frequency and severity of these accidents have renewed calls for authorities to tackle the underlying issues, such as investing in road infrastructure and enforcing stricter driving laws.
