Islamabad – In a significant development for regional safety, authorities have confirmed that a high-ranking militant leader and ISKP Spokesman was arrested during a security operation.

In May 2025, the founder of the official media wing of the group, the Al-Azaim Foundation, Sultan Aziz Azzam, was captured trying to cross the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

Azzam was born in the year 1978 in the Nangarhar region of Afghanistan and graduated with a degree in law and Sharia in the year 2005 at the University of Nangarhar.

He was a professional reporter with an FM radio station in Jalalabad before resorting to extremism, using his education.

His transition from a media professional to a terrorist leader makes the news that the ISKP Spokesman Arrested even more significant for intelligence agencies.

A Career Built on Propaganda

Azzam became a member of the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) in 2016. It is reported that he was pushed toward the group by the harsh atrocities that the Salafi community experienced in Afghanistan.

Due to his media experience, he attained the ranks fast and emerged as a high-ranking member of the ISKP Shura.

He was commanding all media processing and managed the Al-Azzam media channel, which was the main source of the group in terms of recruitment and terror.

He was so influential that the United States government officially declared him a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” in November 2021.

The imprisonment of the ISKP Spokesman is a huge setback to the organization in terms of its capacity to communicate with its supporters and strategies on future psychological operations.

Impacts on Regional Safety

This arrest, according to intelligence experts, will cripple the internal structure of the group. Azzam, who was the architect of the group’s image all these years, justified violent actions and organized messaging all over the world.

As the ISKP Spokesman is arrested, the group has lost its most seasoned media planner and one of the main ideological leaders who helped to bring traditional journalism and digital warfare together.

Although the war against these types of organizations is still going on, this is considered a victory for the peace-pursuing parties in the region.
