Islamabad/New Delhi, May 10, 2025— The conflict between India and Pakistan escalated sharply following the Pahalgam tragedy, triggering a rapid series of military actions and international intervention to prevent further violence.
Operation Sindoor and Pakistani Response
On May 7, India launched a series of strikes under the name “Operation Sindoor” targeting multiple locations across Pakistan. According to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), these attacks caused 24 impacts across six areas, resulting in the deaths of 33 civilians and injuries to 76 others. Pakistan responded swiftly and decisively by shooting down five Indian jets and destroying Indian brigade headquarters and check posts along the Line of Control (LoC). India escalated the conflict further on May 10 by launching air-to-ground missile strikes on three Pakistani airbases early that morning. In retaliation, Pakistan initiated “Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos,” intensifying military engagements along the LoC. The severity of the clashes prompted the United States to intervene urgently. U.S. diplomats mediated a ceasefire agreement that went into effect at 4:30 PM on the same day, halting the ongoing hostilities and preventing further casualties.
International Reaction and Future Outlook
U.S. President Donald Trump praised the leadership of both India and Pakistan for their roles in agreeing to the ceasefire. Through a post on Truth Social, he lauded their “strength, wisdom, and fortitude” in avoiding massive loss of life and destruction. Trump emphasized that “millions of good and innocent people could have died” had the conflict continued unchecked. He also expressed his commitment to working toward resolving the longstanding Kashmir dispute. Furthermore, Trump announced plans to “substantially” increase trade with countries worldwide, including India and Pakistan, calling both “great countries” and describing the ceasefire as a “historic and heroic decision.”
