Islamabad – In an important step toward strengthening bilateral relations, Iran and Pakistan have introduced a direct flight between the capital cities of the two countries, Tehran and Islamabad.
The new air service, which was announced by Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam on Tuesday, September 9, has been a landmark move to improve tourism, people-to-people contacts, and business exchanges between the two neighboring countries.

The flight, to be run by Iran AirTour, was inaugurated following the recent high-level visit of the Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezhakian, to Pakistan.
Ambassador Moghadam underscored the work together, saying, “With the valued support and follow-up of all stakeholders from both the Iranian and Pakistani sides… a comprehensive agreement was successfully reached with the esteemed Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in the field of air transportation.”
A Gateway for Tourism and Cultural Exchange
This direct flight will revolutionize tourism between Iran and Pakistan. Although in the past there were great numbers of Pakistani tourists traveling to Iran to make a religious pilgrimage, this new path is likely to expand the range of tourists.
Ambassador Moghadam stated that he hoped the service would see a significant rise in Iranian tourists visiting the many scenic landscapes and cultural sites in Pakistan.
He also highlighted how the flight facilitated closer relations with the hospitable people of Pakistan.
Other than religious tourism, the flight opens new possibilities of cultural exploration. Both countries have a rich history and a similar Persianate background, with many historical and Sufi shrines in Pakistan having a following of their own.
On the same note, the ancient cities of Iran, the busy bazaars, and the architectural marvels provide an attractive tourist and historical cultural attraction to Pakistani tourists. The direct connection makes these sites more accessible than ever before by reducing the time and logistical barriers of travelling to these sites.
Bolstering Economic and Strategic Relations
This new air connection is not just a facility for the travelers; it is a strategic measure of reinforcing the economic relationship between Tehran and Islamabad. It is predicted that direct flights will be a boost to the business community as they will ease travel among traders and investors and decrease the use of third-country transit hubs.
This is in line with the great objective of the two countries to increase the bilateral trade volume, which has been a major discussion in the recent high-level meetings.
The project is timed with the resurgence of the focus on regional connectivity. After several months of increased tensions earlier in the year, both governments have shown a marked inclination towards diplomatic and economic collaboration.
