Reports have emerged indicating that Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Ali Khamenei, was secretly transferred to Russia for urgent medical treatment following alleged injuries sustained during recent US -Israeli military strikes on Iran.
The Supreme Leader’s health had remained shrouded in uncertainty after he was conspicuously absent from the Al-Quds Day rally, where other top Iranian leaders were present. These developments fueled speculation among international observers about the severity of his condition.
According to Kuwaiti media outlet Al-Jarida, Khamenei underwent surgery in Russia due to concerns over both the seriousness of his injuries and potential security risks within Iran. A high-ranking Iranian official cited by the outlet reportedly confirmed that the procedure was successful, and that Khamenei is currently recuperating at a hospital located inside a presidential compound.
The transfer reportedly took place on March 12, 2026, aboard a Russian military aircraft, following a telephonic conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Mesoud Pezeshikian. The decision to move Khamenei outside Iran was driven by fears that local medical facilities might be vulnerable to further attacks.
Earlier reports from the British media outlet The Guardian claimed that the Supreme Leader had fallen into a coma and was being treated in secret. Neither Iranian nor Russian authorities have officially confirmed the details of his condition or location.
This episode has intensified international concern over Iran’s leadership stability, particularly given the ongoing regional tensions and the opaque nature of information surrounding the Supreme Leader’s health. Analysts note that the secrecy surrounding his treatment reflects both security considerations and the sensitive political implications of any potential incapacitation.
