Karachi – Anchorperson Imtiaz Mir has tragically died, a week after being critically injured in a targeted shooting in Karachi.
Mir worked at a private television channel, Metro 1 News. He succumbed to his injuries on Sunday at a private hospital, his family confirmed, sparking national condemnation and raising concerns over the safety of journalists in Pakistan.
The incident occurred last week near Kala Board in Malir, where Mir was traveling in a car driven by his older brother, Mohammed Salih.
According to police reports, six unidentified suspects riding two motorcycles opened fire on their vehicle.
Both Mir and his brother sustained injuries and were rushed to Liaquat National Hospital, where Mir remained under intensive care before his condition deteriorated on Sunday. His family stated that details of the funeral and burial would be announced shortly.
Conflicting Motives
The Saudabad police initially registered an FIR against unknown killers. However, the local police report later indicated a possible link to a local feud.
Saudabad Police Station House Officer (SHO) Ateequr Rehman confirmed that a case had been registered against a man and his sons, suggesting the incident may have been motivated by a land dispute in the town of Thul in Jacobabad.
“Police have registered a case against a man and his sons over the attack on the journalist,” the SHO said. “The incident was motivated by a land dispute in the town of Thul in Jacobabad. A hitherto little-known group claimed responsibility for the attack, but it lacked credibility.”
Condolences Pour In
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah expressed deep grief and sorrow, ordering the Inspector General of Police to arrest the killers immediately.
CM Shah vowed that the perpetrators “would not escape the clutches of law enforcement agencies,” assuring that “Justice will be provided to the bereaved family of Mir and the Sindh government is determined to bring this case to its logical conclusion.”
Similarly, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon paid tribute to Mir, calling him a “hardworking and fearless journalist who always highlighted public issues.”
Memon pledged the Sindh government would “leave no stone unturned” to apprehend those involved and “give them exemplary punishment,” reinforcing the government’s commitment to protecting journalists’ lives and property.
A spokesperson for the Karachi Police also confirmed that Additional IG Karachi Javed Alam Odho had expressed “deep grief and sorrow” over the death of the senior anchorperson.
