JERUSALEM_ Former U.S. envoy and senior advisor Jared Kushner held a key meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem. The discussion centered on the Gaza ceasefire and the revival of Donald Trump’s 20-point Middle East peace plan. The meeting came as global reactions remain positive toward the truce mediated by Washington, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey.

Two Years of Conflict, Hope for Calm

Officials confirmed that the ceasefire marks the first breakthrough after two years of war, which claimed over 69,000 lives, mostly women and children. The truce has offered a reprieve to millions in Gaza, though both Israeli and Palestinian sides remain cautious about long-term peace.

Focus on Disarmament and Governance

According to Israeli spokesperson Shosh Bedrosian, the talks reviewed proposals including:

  • Disarming Hamas,
  • Deploying international peacekeepers, and
  • Establishing a post-Hamas administrative body in Gaza.

Hamas, however, dismissed any plan to lay down arms. Netanyahu asserted in parliament that Gaza must be demilitarized and peaceful by any means necessary.

Rafah Tensions Threaten Truce

Reports indicate that over 200 Hamas fighters remain trapped in Rafah’s underground tunnels. While Hamas demands safe passage, Israel has refused. U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff termed Rafah a test case for the peace plan,” warning that any forced action could derail the ceasefire.

UN-Backed Peacekeeping Under Discussion

The ceasefire terms include forming an interim Gaza council, deploying an international security force, and initiating reconstruction projects. However, the proposed UN-backed peace mission faces hesitation from several states.

Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey may join, while the UAE has expressed reservations, calling current conditions “unfavorable for participation.”

Regional Implications

Analysts view Kushner’s visit as a test of U.S. diplomatic re-engagement in the Middle East, especially as Washington seeks to balance Israeli security with humanitarian recovery in Gaza. The outcome could shape the next phase of regional normalization efforts.
