Lahore, May 27, 2025 – Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan fiercely opposed the proposed Goonda Act during a charged assembly session, voicing serious concerns over its potential for misuse. He vowed to block the bill’s passage, even pledging to take the matter to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz if needed. His bold position sparked a session filled with political friction, vocal public concerns, and direct criticism of governance.

In a strong rebuttal to the opposition-led session convened by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), Khan rejected the Goonda Act outright. He pledged to resist it at all levels, asserting, “I will go wherever I have to go” to stop it. He also warned PTI against tabling a no-confidence motion, claiming that internal divisions within the party could result in the defection of 20 to 25 members.

Security, Governance, and Institutional Support

Condemning political violence, Khan emphasized the urgency of eradicating terrorism and indirectly linked unrest in Balochistan to India’s RAW. He reaffirmed unwavering support for the Pakistan Army, stating that it would play a decisive role in eliminating terrorism.

Multiple MPAs raised pressing public issues during the session. MPA Ahmar Bhatti protested a 26% fee hike in private schools during summer vacations, referencing a court directive to charge only half. Responding promptly, Speaker Khan referred the matter to the Standing Committee on Education. Meanwhile, Parliamentary Secretary for Sports Anas Mahmood faced sharp criticism as PTI MPA Hafiz Farhat Javed demanded the removal of PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi over ineffective leadership.

Legislative Delays and Political Criticism

Lawmakers expressed concern over legislative delays and bureaucratic overreach. Addressing these frustrations, Speaker Khan emphasized that MPAs must actively participate and chair committee meetings when present, citing the 1972 Act as a basis for accountability.

Later, during a ceremony, Khan defended state institutions. He highlighted the importance of dialogue and reaffirmed the Constitution’s primacy. Urging political parties to avoid undermining institutions through populist rhetoric, he reminded the assembly that many such parties have previously benefited from military support.

Economic Challenges and Session Adjournment

Touching on economic instability, he referred to ongoing IMF negotiations. He also criticized politicians who avoid taxes to maintain voter appeal, stressing that tax compliance is crucial for economic recovery.

The session ended abruptly due to a lack of quorum and was deferred to the next day. Amid legislative disorder and heightened political tension, the Goonda Act has emerged as a central flashpoint in Punjab’s shifting political narrative.
