Scotland_ A Scottish court has sentenced 25-year-old Afghan asylum seeker Rafiullah Ahmadzai to nine years in prison for raping a 17-year-old girl.

The attack occurred in a public park in October 2023, shortly after Ahmadzai arrived in the United Kingdom.

During the trial in Edinburgh, Judge Thomas Welsh described the assault as “horrifying and violent.”

He emphasized that the victim suffered lasting trauma and stated that the lengthy sentence reflects the severity of the crime.

Along with the rape conviction, the court found Ahmadzai guilty of threatening and abusive behavior.

Ahmadzai denied the charges, claiming the encounter was consensual.

He told the court he fled Afghanistan after the Taliban detained him for his previous service in the national army.

This case has sparked intense debate regarding the UK asylum system.

While Police Scotland praised the verdict as a victory for victims’ rights, legal experts note that Ahmadzai now faces potential deportation.

His defense lawyer warned that returning him to Afghanistan could put his life at risk. However, Scottish authorities maintained that the justice system will punish serious crimes regardless of an offender’s immigration status.
