Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — A security convoy was ambushed by terrorists in the Sultan Kalli area of Kurram Agency on Tuesday, resulting in the martyrdom of six personnel and injuries to at least 14 others, according to security sources.
The attack reportedly began with a powerful roadside explosion that destroyed multiple military vehicles, followed by intense gunfire from unidentified militants. The blast was so severe that several vehicles were completely engulfed in flames.
Immediate Response and Evacuation
Security forces swiftly retaliated and cordoned off the area, launching a comprehensive search operation to track down the attackers. Rescue teams rushed the injured personnel to a nearby military hospital, where several of them are said to be in critical condition. Medical teams have been placed on high alert in anticipation of possible further casualties.
No Claim of Responsibility Yet
So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, initial intelligence reports suggest the assault bears the hallmarks of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which has previously carried out similar attacks in the tribal belt targeting convoys and security installations. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of cross-border involvement, given Kurram’s proximity to the Afghan border.
Rising Violence in Tribal Districts
This attack comes amid a recent uptick in militant violence across Pakistan’s northwestern tribal districts, particularly in Khyber, North Waziristan, and Kurram. Analysts warn that the resurgence of terrorist activity poses a serious challenge to Pakistan’s ongoing counterterrorism efforts.
Local sources report heightened security across the region, with additional checkpoints established and movement restrictions imposed near the attack site.
Government Condemnation Expected
An official statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) is awaited. Meanwhile, senior government and military officials are expected to condemn the attack and reaffirm Pakistan’s resolve to eliminate terrorism in all its forms.
