ISLAMABAD_ Rapper Talha Anjum sparked a social media storm after waving and draping himself in an Indian flag during a performance in Nepal. The incident occurred during his performance of ‘Kaun Talha,’ a diss track aimed at Indian rapper Nazi, when an audience member handed him the flag mid-show. The gesture immediately ignited criticism online, especially given the tense Pakistan–India relations.
Clarification on Stage
Speaking on the 365 News show Rise and Shine, hosted by Nadia Khan and Zohaib Hassan, Anjum explained that in the heat of the moment, he interpreted the gesture as a sign of support from Indian fans in the audience. “It was respectfully handed to me. I did not realize how long I was holding it,” he stated, emphasizing that the act was not meant to disrespect Pakistan.
Public Apology
Anjum offered a clear apology to his Pakistani fans, saying:
“To everybody whose heart has been hurt by any of my actions, I would like to apologize. If you are not there, then I am not there. I am all because of Pakistan.”
The rapper highlighted that his identity and career are deeply tied to Pakistan, referring to himself as “the finest Pakistani rapper.”
Previous Statements and Online Debate
Immediately after the performance, Anjum initially doubled down, claiming his art knows no borders and that he would repeat the act despite media criticism. “My heart has no place for hate. Urdu rap is and will always be borderless,” he wrote on X. The apology on national television marked a shift towards reconciliation with his domestic audience.
Context of Pakistan–India Relations
The incident occurred in a period of heightened tension between Pakistan and India, following the May conflict. Cultural exchanges remain restricted, Pakistani content has been blocked in India, and fans rely on VPNs to access music and shows. Even cricket, traditionally a bridge between the nations, has experienced strained relations. In this climate, Anjum’s stage gesture drew particularly strong reactions.
While the flag incident was unintentional, it highlights the sensitivity of cross-border symbolism in contemporary Pakistan–India relations. Anjum’s televised apology aims to reassure fans that his loyalty to Pakistan remains steadfast, even as his music continues to reach international audiences.
