ISLAMABAD_Rapper Talha Anjum found himself at the center of a cultural storm after draping an Indian flag over his shoulders during a recent concert, prompting sharp reactions from media and fans alike. While some praised the rapper for showing respect to his audience and promoting cross-border artistic unity, others criticized the gesture as insensitive, given the historically tense relations between Pakistan and India.

Aggressive TV Interview Fuels Backlash

The controversy escalated when Anjum appeared on Rise and Shine with Nadia Khan. The interview, described as aggressively confrontational, saw Khan repeatedly interrupting the rapper, sarcastically calling him “beta,” and demanding an apology. Her co-host eventually intervened to let Anjum speak, highlighting the intensity of the debate.

Celebrities Rally Behind Anjum

Pakistan’s entertainment industry largely came to Anjum’s defense. Actors Sonya Hussyn and Kinza Hashmi praised his composure and the respect he showed for fans,

while Tooba Siddiqui encouraged him to respond creatively with a diss track.

Comedians and musicians echoed the sentiment that art should transcend borders. Singer Bilal Ali noted that many Pakistani artists benefit from opportunities in India, while Saif Samejo condemned the aggressive tone as reflecting insecurity within the media.

Social Media and Public Reaction

Prominent activist Jibran Nasir argued that Anjum’s gesture actually disproved the narrative of mutual hatred between the two countries. On X (formerly Twitter), he described the backlash as “cheap” and a symptom of cultural impoverishment, praising Anjum for demonstrating respect for shared culture and language. Public opinion has been divided: some viewers criticized the rapper for showing perceived softness toward India, while others applauded his borderless, art-centric stance. https://x.com/MJibranNasir/status/1991906882077045236?s=20

Moving Beyond Nationalism

Despite the controversy, Anjum’s message remains clear: art has no borders. His apology on television, though prompted by the aggressive interview, reflects an effort to bridge divides, while celebrity support reinforces the view that creative expression should not be confined by political boundaries. The incident sparked national conversations on patriotism, media conduct, and the role of artists in cultural diplomacy.
