White House_ Two National Guard members were critically wounded in a shooting near the White House on November 26, a day before Thanksgiving. Tragically, 20-year-old Sarah Backstrom, a servicewoman from West Virginia, succumbed to her injuries, while her fellow guard, 24-year-old Andrew Wolf, remains in critical condition.

Suspect Identified

Authorities identified the suspect as 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakhanwal, who entered the U.S. in September 2021. Prosecutors reported that Lakhanwal drove from Washington State to Washington, D.C., with a “clear intent to target the U.S. capital,” according to D.C. Attorney General Jenine Piro.

Details of the Attack

The attack occurred around 2:15 p.m., when Lakhanwal opened fire with a .357 Smith and Wesson revolver near a corner two blocks northwest of the White House. The assailant first shot Backstrom, then fired multiple times at Wolf. Both soldiers had been deployed from West Virginia in August to assist with White House security duties.

Suspect’s Background

FBI Director Kash Patel classified the incident as “an assault on federal law enforcement” and confirmed that a comprehensive investigation is underway. Lakhanwal reportedly operated in Kandahar, southern Afghanistan, cooperating with the CIA as part of the “Zero Unit,” a counterterrorism force tasked with targeting Taliban and IS operatives. While the CIA has officially denied direct collaboration, it has provided intelligence and logistical support.

Immigration and Asylum History

Lakhanwal was admitted to the U.S. under the Operation Allies Welcome program in 2021 and was approved for asylum in April 2025. His motive remains under investigation.

Response from U.S. Leadership

President Donald Trump addressed the nation during his Thanksgiving remarks, confirming Backstrom’s death and highlighting her dedication since joining the National Guard in June 2023. He stated that Wolf remains in critical condition and pledged full support for the investigation.

Legal Implications

Following the attack, U.S. immigration authorities have announced a review of green cards issued to citizens from countries of concern. The move comes after it was revealed that the suspect, an Afghan who entered under a 2021 resettlement program, carried out the shooting. Authorities warn that if either guardsman had died at the scene, Lakhanwal could face first-degree murder charges and, if convicted, potentially the death penalty.

Investigation Ongoing

Law enforcement agencies continue to urge anyone with information to come forward to assist the investigation.
