Washington / Global – The United States has formally withdrawn from the World Health Organization (WHO), marking a significant shift that removes one of the UN agency’s largest financial contributors. The move follows a year after President Donald Trump signed an executive order announcing the exit, citing alleged WHO favoritism toward China during the COVID-19 pandemic.
US Accusations Against WHO
The US Department of Health and Human Services claimed that WHO’s “mismanagement” during the global coronavirus outbreak led to flawed decision-making. The agency also accused WHO of failing to implement reforms and preventing political influence from member states, which, according to the US, compromised its global effectiveness.
WHO Response
WHO rejected these allegations, emphasizing that the US departure harms not only the United States but global health efforts. Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that losing American financial support could significantly limit the organization’s capacity to respond to worldwide health crises.
Global Implications
The withdrawal threatens WHO’s operational and financial stability, as the United States has historically been a leading donor. Experts have cautioned that this decision could disrupt international pandemic response programs, global vaccination campaigns, and efforts to strengthen healthcare systems worldwide.
Despite the setback, WHO reaffirmed its commitment to continue collaborating with other countries and maintaining its mission to prevent, prepare for, and respond to infectious disease outbreaks globally.
