News Desk – 02 May 2025: IPL 2025 player shortage concerns have surfaced as Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 runs concurrently, limiting overseas talent availability, said Ricky Ponting.

Ponting, head coach of Punjab Kings (PBKS), shared his frustration after losing Lockie Ferguson and Glenn Maxwell to injuries. He admitted that finding quality foreign replacements has been difficult.

“So we’ve actually been a little bit patient,” Ponting told reporters after PBKS’s clash with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). “With the PSL happening at the same time, there’s not a lot of high-quality replacements out there.”

Maxwell was ruled out just days ago, while Ferguson has been unavailable for weeks. Both were key components of the PBKS squad.

Ponting added that franchise officials were exploring young Indian players as possible replacements. “We’re having a look around at Indian talent as well,” he stated.

The IPL 2025 player shortage problem stems from scheduling. This year, IPL and PSL share the same April–May window, creating clashes in player commitments.

The PSL 10 began on April 11 with a grand opening ceremony. It will conclude on May 18 after 34 competitive matches. Players from around the world have joined PSL franchises, reducing the pool of options available for IPL teams needing urgent replacements.

This unusual overlap has reignited debate over cricket calendar management and league prioritization. Ricky Ponting’s remarks underline the strategic difficulties IPL franchises now face during mid-season disruptions.
