Islamabad, May 24, 2025 — Ceasefire Announced Amid Rising Tensions Between India and Pakistan. In a significant development, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar announced a full and immediate ceasefire with India following days of intense military escalation along the Line of Control (LoC). The decision, reached under international pressure, particularly from the United States, comes amid growing fears of a full-scale conflict in South Asia. While Pakistan confirmed the ceasefire, India has yet to issue an official statement.

U.S. Mediation Cited in De-escalation

Former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed credit for brokering the truce, describing it as the result of “a long night of talks mediated by the United States.” His former Secretary of State lauded the leadership of both nations, calling the decision an act of “wisdom” and “prudence.” The U.S. played a key role in de-escalating tensions after diplomatic backchannels were activated through Washington.

Escalation After Strikes and Civilian Casualties

Earlier this week, India launched air and missile strikes on targets inside Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, killing at least 31 civilians. These attacks were reportedly in retaliation for an assault on Indian tourists in Pahalgam last month. Pakistan strongly denied any involvement in the incident and urged the international community to conduct an independent investigation.

Following India’s offensive, Islamabad responded with Operation Bunyan al Marsoos, targeting 36 strategic sites including major air bases inside India and Indian-administered Kashmir. Since then, both nations exchanged artillery fire, drone incursions, and missile launches, pushing the region to the brink of war.

Hope for Peace Amid Fragile Calm

The ceasefire, although tentative, has sparked cautious optimism. Diplomatic observers now await India’s formal response and details on any agreed-upon monitoring mechanisms. With international actors urging restraint, the coming days will be critical in determining whether this ceasefire marks a step toward sustained peace or merely a temporary pause in hostilities.
