Chitral- June 20, 2025: The iconic Shandur Polo Festival began on Friday in Upper Chitral, with a strong spotlight on cultural tourism. Organized by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tourism Authority in collaboration with Pakistan Army and Chitral Scouts, the event attracted large crowds, marking a successful start to the three-day festivities.
Barrister Saif, the Adviser to Chief Minister on Information, and Minister for Sports Fakhar Jehan were the chief guests at the opening ceremony. Speaking on the occasion, Barrister Saif described Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a “peaceful province” with vast potential for tourism development. He also emphasized the region’s ability to host international-standard events like Shandur Polo.
During the ceremony, officials praised the provincial government’s efforts to promote adventure and cultural destinations. Secretary Tourism Bakhtiar Khan, Commissioner Malakand Abid Wazir, and DG Tourism Habibullah Arif were also present.
Thrilling Polo and Local Pride
The opening match featured teams from Sarlaaspur (Chitral) and Ghizer (Gilgit-Baltistan). In a high-energy contest, Sarlaaspur claimed victory with a 6–3 scoreline, igniting applause from local and visiting spectators. Organizers ensured seamless security and crowd management, with support from the police and district administrations of Upper and Lower Chitral.
Shandur Polo Ground, often called the “Roof of the World” due to its elevation, once again served as the ultimate venue for traditional freestyle polo. The festival not only promotes sport but also strengthens inter-regional bonds between Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral through friendly rivalry.
Apart from polo, the event features folk music, cultural performances, and stalls showcasing local handicrafts and cuisine. These elements aim to preserve the region’s heritage while boosting its economy through tourism.
As regional conflicts dominate headlines, Shandur offers a refreshing glimpse into peace, heritage, and hospitality. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s push to promote cultural tourism aligns with its broader vision for economic growth and social cohesion.
