Karachi – A 19-year-old newlywed woman was admitted to Civil Hospital Karachi in critical condition after allegedly being subjected to brutal sexual violence by her husband. Police have arrested the accused.
Police surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed told that the girl married on June 15 in Lyari and is now in a coma. Her medical examination is consistent with sexual assault.
According to the FIR registered on July 5 at Baghdadi Police Station under Sections 324 and 376-B of the Pakistan Penal Code, the victim’s brother alleged that she was subjected to unnatural sexual acts and assaulted with a foreign object by her husband, leading to internal bleeding.
The family initially admitted her to a private hospital, but as her condition worsened, she was shifted to the ICU at Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Trauma Centre. The FIR states the husband threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the assault.
DIG South Syed Asad Raza confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and an investigation is underway.
The Karachi sexual violence case highlights the persistence of gender-based violence in Pakistan, despite laws prescribing up to capital punishment for rape. Rights activists stress the need for better enforcement and victim support systems.
This is the latest in a string of such cases. Last week, police arrested a suspect in a gang rape case in Ittehad Town. Earlier this year, several women were assaulted in separate incidents in Karachi and Gujranwala.
