Renowned Islamic scholar Maulana Muhammad Idris martyred in targeted attack in Charsadda, raising concerns over scholar safety.

A few days ago, I wrote an article about Sheikh-ul-Hadith Maulana Muhammad Idris, expressing deep concern over the negative social media campaign launched against him. Unfortunately, those fears have now turned into reality, as a great scholar serving the field of Hadith has been martyred in an act of brutality and oppression.

According to reports, on Tuesday morning in the Utmanzai area of Charsadda district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, unknown armed men martyred Maulana Muhammad Idris. The question remains: what was his crime? How many of the killers of such scholars have been arrested so far? Will the murderers of Maulana Sahib be brought to justice?

His martyrdom is not just the killing of a religious scholar; it is a serious attack on humanity, Pakistan, Islamic values, and intellectual moderation. Those who hate scholars, spread hatred, and want to push society towards chaos may now feel satisfied, thinking that they have removed an obstacle from their path. However, such killings may also open the door to further violence and unrest.

It is believed that the same elements who mocked and targeted him on social media with insults and false allegations may also be involved in creating the environment that led to this tragedy. These individuals are neither supporters of Islam nor Pakistan, but promoters of hatred and division. In recent days, Maulana Idris had also appreciated Pakistan’s role in diplomatic efforts, including mediation between Iran and the United States, which reportedly angered certain extremist circles.

A coordinated campaign had already been running against him on social media, involving derogatory language, false accusations, and character assassination. Unfortunately, such toxic environments often translate into real-world violence, and today we are witnessing another tragic consequence of this reality.

This is not the first time a religious scholar has been targeted in Pakistan. The country, especially Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has witnessed such tragedies for decades. Scholars have always played a key role in intellectual, spiritual, and moral guidance, yet they have repeatedly become victims of terrorism and extremism.

If we look at the past, many respected scholars have sacrificed their lives in this struggle. Renowned Karachi scholar Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai was martyred in 2004. Similarly, prominent Peshawar scholar Maulana Hassan Jan was killed in 2007. Numerous other scholars, mosque preachers, and teachers have also been targeted over the years for the simple act of teaching religion and promoting social reform.

In recent years as well, scholars from different schools of thought have been targeted, clearly showing that terrorism is not limited to any one group or ideology but is a threat to the entire society and its stability.

Scholars hold a very high position in society. They not only acquire knowledge but also pass it on, train future generations, and provide intellectual foundations for communities. The martyrdom of a scholar is like the extinguishing of a guiding light that benefits countless people.

It is also important to reflect on why such an environment is being created where scholars are targeted. One major reason is intolerance, sectarianism, and hate campaigns on social media. Continuous propaganda against individuals can influence weak minds and push them toward extremism.

It is the responsibility of state institutions to thoroughly investigate such incidents and bring the perpetrators to justice. At the same time, action must also be taken against those spreading hatred on social media to prevent future tragedies.

Society as a whole must also take responsibility. We must learn to tolerate differences of opinion and avoid participating in unverified negative campaigns against any individual. Respect and protection of scholars is a collective duty.

The martyrdom of Maulana Muhammad Idris is a major tragedy. His academic services, teaching style, and dedication to religion will always be remembered. His death sends a message that the light of knowledge never dies; it continues to pass from one generation to another.

His investigation must be conducted immediately, and the perpetrators must be exposed and punished according to the law so that such incidents can be prevented in the future.

Otherwise, there is a risk that such conditions may once again lead the country toward further conflict and instability.

May Allah grant Maulana Muhammad Idris the highest ranks in Jannah, elevate his status, and protect all scholars. Ameen.
