The Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF) has claimed responsibility for a guerrilla operation targeting a Taliban security unit in Fayzabad. Which is the capital of Badakhshan province, highlighting what observers describe as a continuing pattern of low-intensity armed resistance in northern Afghanistan.
According to a statement released by the AFF, the operation took place at around 6:00 pm on Saturday, December 13, near the provincial governor’s office.
The group said the attack targeted a Taliban security reserve unit stationed in the area and resulted in the killing of three Taliban members while another was wounded.
The AFF added that its fighters withdrew safely after the operation. Taliban authorities have so far not issued any confirmation or denial regarding the incident.
Attack near provincial power center
The claimed attack is notable due to its location close to one of the most sensitive administrative sites in Badakhshan.
The AFF alleged that the targeted security reserve unit has previously been used to control protests and reinforce administrative authority in the province, though these claims could not be independently verified.
Following the reported incident, residents and local sources indicated that security measures in parts of Fayzabad were tightened.
Taliban officials, however, have remained silent on whether casualties occurred or whether any arrests followed the operation.
Series of claims in northern Afghanistan
The Fayzabad incident comes amid a series of recent claims by armed opposition groups in northern Afghanistan.
Over the past week, the AFF and the National Resistance Front (NRF) have separately reported attacks on Taliban positions in Kunduz province.
The AFF claimed that two Taliban members, including a local commander, were killed and three others wounded in an attack on Friday evening.
The NRF has also claimed responsibility for a separate attack near a checkpoint in Kunduz city earlier in the week.
The United Nations has noted that while multiple opposition groups have claimed dozens of attacks in recent months.
Analysts say that the persistence of such incidents in provinces like Badakhshan, Panjshir, and Kunduz suggests an effort by armed groups to maintain visibility and pressure despite limited resources.
