Islamabad— The Afghan Ambassador to Pakistan, Sardar Ahmad Shakaib, has requested Islamabad to allow Afghan refugees additional time before their repatriation. He said Afghan citizens in Pakistan own significant properties, businesses, and investments that cannot be disposed of in a short period.
Unilateral Decision Criticized
Shakaib, in a recent interview, criticized the government’s decision to deport Afghan nationals as unilateral. He said many refugees are not allowed to take their belongings across the border. Selling properties and businesses on such short notice is almost impossible, he added. According to him, Afghan refugees need time and resources to protect their assets.
The ambassador highlighted that refugees have contributed economically during their stay. “Afghan citizens hold valuables and businesses in Pakistan. For this reason, repatriation without a proper plan will lead to huge losses,” Shakaib stated.
Proposal for Trilateral Committee
To manage the issue, Shakaib suggested creating a trilateral committee comprising Pakistan, Afghanistan, and UNHCR. He said this body should oversee the safe and organized return of Afghan nationals. The Afghan Ambassador emphasized that Afghan refugees must be given an adequate timeline to arrange the sale or transfer of their possessions.
He also noted that Afghan authorities have raised concerns with Pakistani officials. “We asked for measures to safeguard properties and businesses of Afghan refugees. It is essential to work jointly for a systematic process,” he added.
Call for Cooperation
The ambassador reiterated his demand for coordination. He stressed that decisions affecting millions should not be taken unilaterally. “Consultation is key to avoid hardships for Afghan citizens,” Shakaib said. He called on Pakistan to cooperate with Afghanistan and the UN for a fair solution.
