China Urges U.S. to Remove Tariffs

China has demanded that the United States immediately remove unilateral tariffs following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling. The court struck down President Donald Trump’s trade measures, saying he misused a 1977 law to impose tariffs that he did not have authority to enforce.

In response, China’s Ministry of Commerce said that trade wars have no winners. Protectionism harms everyone, the ministry added. Beijing emphasized that it is reviewing the implications of the court ruling. China urged Washington to refrain from imposing tariffs on its trading partners.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also warned the United States that China will protect its national interests. Officials said they are closely monitoring alternative measures, including trade investigations, that Washington could use to maintain tariffs.

Trump Announces New Tariffs, China Watches Closely

Despite the Supreme Court decision, Trump announced a 15 percent global duty on imports under a different legal authority. This new measure is set to take effect soon. The move has prompted China to scrutinize U.S. actions closely.

Meanwhile, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said that existing trade agreements with China and the European Union remain in effect. He added that the upcoming meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will focus on issues other than trade.

The developments have raised concerns about global trade stability. Analysts say China’s warning and Trump’s new tariffs could escalate tensions. The situation underscores the fragility of trade relations and the importance of clear legal authority for tariffs.

The Supreme Court ruling has challenged Trump’s previous trade measures, but new tariffs may prolong the dispute. China continues to press for tariff removal while keeping a close watch on U.S. actions. The upcoming U.S.-China meeting could play a key role in easing tensions or adding further uncertainty to international trade.
