Islamabad – Religious scholar and speaker Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza has been arrested by Jhelum police and placed under 30-day detention under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO). Authorities said the step was taken to prevent unrest after his recent remarks triggered widespread criticism from religious groups. His academy in Machine Mohalla has also been sealed to restrict gatherings and activities.
An FIR has been lodged against Mirza under Section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code, which pertains to blasphemy, along with relevant provisions of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act. The complaint accuses him of making derogatory comments in a video, leading to strong reactions and petitions demanding action from the administration. Officials confirmed that his arrest followed mounting pressure from religious organizations that staged protests and called for legal measures against him.
The arrest has sparked debate over the balance between freedom of expression and maintaining public order. Mirza, known for his large following on YouTube where he discusses religious interpretations, has often been a polarizing figure. His detention has once again brought Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy laws into the spotlight, with rights advocates expressing concern over the use of such legislation in silencing voices, while supporters of the move argue that it is necessary to prevent potential violence.
For now, Mirza remains in custody for 30 days, though legal experts suggest proceedings could extend further depending on the progress of investigations and court decisions. The case is being closely watched nationwide as authorities weigh legal steps against the scholar amid heightened sensitivities.
