Pakistan Coast Guard response in Gwadar after maritime incident as authorities address misinformation narratives

April 12, 2026

Following an attack on a Pakistan Coast Guards vessel in the Jiwani area near Gwadar, various claims have surfaced on social media. Some groups have exaggerated the incident and raised concerns about Pakistan’s maritime security; however, official sources have termed these narratives premature and unverified.

According to officials, three personnel , Naik Afzal, Soldier Jamil, and Soldier Umair were martyred in the incident. Initial investigations suggest the attack was carried out from the shore. Security sources say the full nature of the incident, its method, and those responsible will only be determined after the completion of investigations.

The banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has claimed responsibility for the attack on a naval patrol boat near Jiwani in Gwadar district.

On the other hand, some social media accounts have described the incident as the “first major attack in open waters” and a threat to Pakistan’s maritime security, while also attempting to link it to the situation in Karachi Port and the Strait of Hormuz. Security experts say such claims may be exaggerated and are not independently verified.

Officials further stated that although a claim of responsibility by the banned BLA has surfaced, it still requires verification, and such statements cannot be considered final before the completion of investigations.

Experts say Pakistan’s coastal and port security functions under a well-organized system, and presenting a single incident as a broader threat to international maritime activity would be inconsistent with ground realities.

Analysts add that in such situations, unverified information and selective narratives not only distort the situation but can also undermine the efforts of security institutions, while state agencies remain actively engaged in uncovering the facts through transparent investigations.
