Karachi police have arrested Jibran, the son of notorious Lyari gangster Rehman Dakait during an operation in the Old City area and recovered an illegal weapon along with ammunition.
According to police officials, the arrest was made on Monday in the District City area within the limits of Kalakot Police Station.
During the operation, officers recovered an unlicensed firearm and live rounds from Jibran’s possession. A new case has been registered against him and further legal proceedings are underway.
Law enforcement authorities described Jibran as a habitual offender stating that he has previously been arrested in multiple criminal cases and has served time in jail.
His criminal record includes FIR No. 183/2023 under Sections 4 and 5 of the Explosive Act and FIR No. 308/2024 under Sections 6/9(2)(3), both registered at Kalakot Police Station.
Police officials said the latest arrest was part of ongoing efforts to curb criminal activity in the Lyari and Old City areas which have historically remained sensitive due to gang-related violence.
Family’s criminal history linked to Lyari gangs
Jibran belongs to a family long associated with organized crime in Lyari. In March 2024, his brother Sarban Dakait was killed in an alleged police encounter in the Old City area.
At the time, Syed Asad Raza, DIG-South said Sarban was leading a criminal gang and was involved in serious offences.
Police had stated that Sarban was wanted in multiple cases, including murder, kidnapping for ransom, drug trafficking and extortion.
In 2021, he was arrested in a drug peddling case in which a large quantity of narcotics including hashish and crystal meth was recovered. He was later released on bail.
Rehman Dakait himself was killed in a police encounter in 2009 along with three accomplices. Authorities say his criminal network continued to operate in parts of Lyari even after his death.
Police said the latest arrest reflects their continued resolve to dismantle remaining criminal elements linked to old gang networks in Karachi.
