LAHORE: The Punjab government has suspended the medical superintendent, head of the gynaecology department, and four doctors at Lady Willingdon Hospital after a viral video of a surgical procedure triggered widespread concern over medical ethics and patient safety.

According to official sources, the incident took place during a Caesarean section (C-section) operation, prompting immediate action on the instructions of the competent authority.

Authorities stated that recording videos during medical procedures is a clear violation of medical ethics, as it compromises patient dignity, privacy, and professional standards. They further added that such behaviour undermines public trust in the healthcare system.

The suspended staff have been asked to submit explanations regarding alleged negligence and failure to fulfil clinical responsibilities.

Reaffirming its stance, the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, said strict adherence to professional ethics will be enforced across all healthcare institutions, with full protection of patient rights and dignity.

The viral footage reportedly shows two surgeries taking place simultaneously, with doctors and staff seen making victory signs during the procedures. The clip has drawn strong criticism for what many describe as inappropriate conduct inside the operating theatre.

Reports also suggest that both procedures were Caesarean sections, and there were allegations that medical staff were competing over who would complete the operation first. Audio from the video is also being interpreted by some as supporting these claims.
