At least one person was killed and eight others, including two women, were injured after a passenger bus was targeted in an explosion in Lakki Marwat, local sources said.

The bus was travelling near the Lakki Cement factory area when the blast occurred.

According to initial reports, the attack was carried out using an improvised explosive device (IED). Witnesses said gunfire was also heard shortly after the explosion, adding to panic among passengers and residents in the area.

The bus was carrying members of the Begukhel tribe, who were on a routine journey when they came under attack.

Rescue teams and local residents rushed the injured to nearby hospitals.

Medical officials said some of the wounded remain in critical condition, while others are receiving treatment for multiple injuries.

Authorities confirmed that the death toll could rise depending on the condition of the critically injured.

Following the incident, security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. Bomb disposal and investigation teams collected evidence from the scene to determine the exact nature of the device used and identify those responsible.

Officials said investigations are ongoing and no group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Lakki Marwat and surrounding areas have witnessed a rise in violence in recent months. The district has seen repeated attacks linked to militant elements and ongoing tensions between armed groups and local tribes.

In response to the deteriorating security situation, some tribal communities have formed so-called “peace committees,” which operate as armed local militias claiming to protect their areas.

Analysts say the presence of these groups, combined with militant activity, has further complicated the law and order situation in the district raising concerns about civilian safety and long-term stability.
