A major environmental restoration initiative has been launched in areas adjoining the Margalla Hills, marking a significant step towards reviving land damaged by years of unregulated crushing activity.
Environmental experts have termed the campaign timely and encouraging, noting that such a structured and comprehensive effort was rarely expected from the Punjab Forest Department in this belt towards Taxila.
According to officials, the campaign is being carried out on the directives of Maryam Nawaz Sharif, with senior provincial minister Marriyum Aurangzeb directly overseeing its implementation.
In the initial phase, 50,000 saplings are being planted to rehabilitate land previously affected by stone crushing and to re-establish green cover across the Margalla ecosystem.
Community-led effort to reverse environmental damage
Sources say unregulated crushing in areas adjacent to the Margalla range had caused serious damage to natural habitats and forest land. The current plantation drive has been specifically designed to restore these degraded zones.
Environmentalists point out that planting native tree species will help reduce soil erosion, stabilize slopes and gradually revive biodiversity in the region.
A key feature of the initiative is the active involvement of students, youth, and local communities. Schoolchildren from various educational institutions are participating enthusiastically while local residents and volunteers are also contributing to the effort.
Experts believe community ownership is essential for ensuring long-term survival of newly planted trees and achieving sustainable environmental outcomes.
Officials clarified that the 50,000 saplings represent only the beginning. In the coming phases, large-scale seed sowing and extended plantation targets will be pursued to promote durable green cover.
As part of the broader Margalla Forest restoration plan, up to five lakh trees are expected to be planted during the spring season.
Environmental specialists say that if the campaign continues consistently and proper care of saplings is ensured, the Margalla Hills could witness a visible increase in forest cover over the next few years.
The initiative is being seen as a reflection of the provincial government’s renewed focus on environmental protection under the “Green Pakistan, Prosperous Pakistan” vision.
Authorities have also urged citizens to safeguard planted trees and actively support eco-friendly practices to secure a healthier environment for future generations.
