Doha – 29 April 2025: IEA’s Foreign Minister Muttaqi discusses Afghanistan future with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani during an official visit. The meeting took place following an official invitation extended to Amir Khan Muttaqi by the Qatari government earlier this week.

Qatar reaffirmed its commitment to continue supporting the Afghan people across various sectors, including humanitarian and diplomatic engagement.

According to the Qatari Foreign Ministry, support for all segments of Afghan society will persist under Qatar’s ongoing policy.

Former diplomat Aziz Maharaj praised the visit, stating Qatar has never negatively interfered in Afghan affairs, unlike other nations. He added that strengthening ties with Qatar helps reduce Afghanistan’s isolation and expand trade, diplomacy, and foreign cooperation.

Political expert Amanullah Hotaki emphasized Qatar’s strong relations with the United States and Europe, calling the visit “strategically important.” He said the presence of global envoys in Qatar makes it a diplomatic hub for advancing Afghanistan’s international standing.

Another expert, Abdul Sadiq Hamidzoy, highlighted shared values between Afghanistan and Qatar, calling Doha a constructive partner in Afghan matters. He stressed that Qatar’s past engagement has been positive and beneficial for Afghanistan’s political development and international acceptance.

Meanwhile, the United Nations granted Muttaqi a one-week travel exemption for the visit, citing diplomatic meetings with Qatari officials. The UN Sanctions Committee approved the exemption from April 27 to May 4, 2025, under the council’s regulated travel framework.

Muttaqi discusses Afghanistan ’s path forward as the Taliban-led administration seeks to build global partnerships amid ongoing diplomatic challenges.

Experts remain hopeful that such visits will yield improved political and economic outcomes for the Afghan population.
