Pakistan’s Foreign Office has issued highly alarming figures regarding the ongoing tension along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border and reported targeting of civilian populations by Afghan Taliban forces. According to the official statement, large-scale casualties have been caused by unprovoked cross-border shelling and indiscriminate firing since Eid al-Fitr last month.
Details of Civilian Casualties
The Foreign Office report states that in multiple incidents of indiscriminate targeting of civilian areas inside Pakistani territory by Afghan Taliban forces, 52 Pakistani civilians have been killed. It further adds that 84 people, including women and children, have been seriously injured in these cowardly attacks and shelling incidents, with some victims reported to be in critical condition.
Violation of International Law
A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said that the violation of border integrity and shelling of innocent civilians by Afghan Taliban forces constitutes a clear breach of international law and established norms between neighboring states. The statement emphasized that deliberately targeting Pakistani civilians is unacceptable under any circumstances, and Pakistan reserves the right to take all necessary measures to protect its people.
Rising Border Tensions
Diplomatic sources report a continuous rise in tensions in border areas since Eid. Pakistan has repeatedly urged Afghan authorities to prevent aggression originating from their territory and to take action against those responsible for cross-border firing. However, no effective measures have been observed so far from the Afghan side.
Call for Stability Amid Escalation
The situation comes at a time when regional peace and stability are being emphasized through dialogue efforts. However, repeated incidents of targeting civilians have raised serious concerns over bilateral relations and border security.
