The Pakistan Navy has launched Operation Muhafiz-ul-Bahr to safeguard national shipping and maritime trade amid growing tensions in the Middle East. The military stated that the initiative aims to ensure the uninterrupted flow of energy supplies and secure vital sea lanes critical to Pakistan’s economy.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the operation comes in response to potential disruptions to Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs) caused by the ongoing regional crisis. With around 90% of Pakistan’s trade conducted via sea, the initiative seeks to keep maritime routes safe and maintain smooth trade operations.

Navy Escorts and Security Measures in Action

The Navy is actively escorting merchant vessels in coordination with the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC). Currently, two merchant ships are under Navy protection, one of which is scheduled to arrive in Karachi today. The operation includes continuous monitoring and control of vessel movements to ensure safe and secure transit.

ISPR emphasized that the Navy is fully aware of the prevailing maritime situation and is prepared to respond to any emerging security threats. The initiative also underscores Pakistan’s commitment to protecting both national shipping and regional maritime stability.

Strategic Importance Amid Regional Crisis

Tensions in the Middle East escalated after recent US and Israeli airstrikes against Iran, prompting retaliatory attacks on military bases and energy infrastructure. These developments have disrupted a significant portion of global crude and gas supplies, especially in the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime passage.

Operation Muhafiz-ul-Bahr ensures that Pakistan remains resilient to such disruptions. The Navy’s escort and monitoring operations provide security for critical trade and energy shipments. By taking proactive steps, Pakistan safeguards its economic interests while contributing to regional maritime security.

The Navy’s swift response highlights its readiness to tackle multifaceted threats and maintain the safety of national shipping. Authorities remain vigilant to evolving regional risks and continue to coordinate closely with civilian shipping agencies to prevent interruptions to trade and energy supply chains.
