At the 48th session of the United Nations Committee on Information, Pakistan presented a strong and principled position against the rising spread of disinformation, hate speech, and politically motivated false narratives in the digital world.
Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to protecting transparency, truth, and human dignity in the global information ecosystem.
Concerns Over Digital Platforms
Addressing the session, Ambassador Jadoon expressed serious concern over the growing misuse of digital platforms. He said these platforms are increasingly being used to systematically spread false information, deepen social divisions, and target vulnerable communities.
According to Pakistan, online hate speech, racism, xenophobia, and particularly Islamophobia are no longer confined to the digital space. They are now translating into real-world violence, discrimination, and human suffering. He warned that such online hostility often lays the groundwork for significant human and material losses.
Disinformation as a Weapon
Pakistan also highlighted the strategic use of disinformation in conflict situations and under foreign occupation. Ambassador Jadoon stated that fabricated narratives are being used to conceal serious human rights violations, discredit legitimate struggles for self-determination, and silence affected populations.
He emphasized that digital platforms are increasingly being exploited to distort facts and suppress the voices of the oppressed.
Call for Responsible Digital Governance
Pakistan urged the international community to establish a framework for responsible digital governance. Ambassador Jadoon called for global mechanisms that ensure transparency and accountability, while safeguarding human rights, diversity, and the security of vulnerable groups in the digital space.
He stressed the need for collective action to counter narratives that undermine legitimate political and human rights movements.

Pakistan’s intervention at the United Nations comes at a time when disinformation is playing an increasingly influential role in shaping global political and humanitarian outcomes.
