Records Tumble During Historic MCG Ashes Test Opening Day

December 26, 2025

Melbourne – The first day of the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was a rollercoaster ride for the cricket enthusiasts.

Australia lost 20 wickets in a spectacular demonstration of bowling supremacy, leaving it on a slender but crucial lead of 46 runs over England on the first day.

This was a record MCG Ashes test day where the ground recorded the most wickets since 1902.

On Friday, with the sun setting, Australia had four and no loss in the second innings, and nightwatchman Scott Boland and Travis Head were looking forward to creating a winning score when play resumes.

A Record-Breaking Crowd Witnesses Chaos

The opening of the match was a moment of history as 93,442 spectators crowded the stadium.

This large attendance was a world record for a cricket match at the stadium, exceeding the attendance of the 2015 World Cup final.

The spectators at this MCG Ashes Test were provided with a masterclass by English pacer Joshua Tongue, who claimed 5-45. His clinical bowling helped dismiss Australia for a meagre 152.

The Australian lower order struggled significantly, losing their final three wickets without adding a single run to the scoreboard after Cameron Green was run out for 17.

England Struggles Under Pressure

Although they were successful in their possession of the ball, England also struggled with the pitch conditions.

They were rolled out in only 110 during their debut inning, and they have missed the momentum offered by their bowlers.

Australia’s veteran bowling attack, which has faced questions about its age, once again proved that experience is a priceless asset in the MCG Ashes test environment.

Starc, aged 35, said that the team laughs frequently at the remarks concerning their age, stressing that the ability to overcome the moments of good and bad is what really wins the game.

Australia Looking to Seal the Series

Already having scored an uncontested 3-0 in the series following a valiant win in Adelaide, Australia, is out to complete the tour on a high note.

The history of England in the country has been a tough one in recent times as the team has lost 16 of its last 18 Tests on Australian soil.

Captain Pat Cummins has emphasized that the team has learnt through previous tours where they have missed chances at becoming champions.

As this MCG Ashes Test enters its second day, the hosts are set to retain their control over the game and make sure that they do not allow England to make their way back into the game.
