Taliban’s CPEC Entry Triggers Global Alarm
Afghanistan- May 25,2025: Regional security threats are once again in focus after a key meeting in Beijing. Foreign ministers from China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan agreed to include the Taliban-led Afghanistan in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Soon after, the U.S. State Department announced discussions to label the Taliban as a terrorist group. Meanwhile, Russia offered to resume talks with the U.S. over Afghanistan, which last took place in 2022. Moscow’s envoy Zamir Kabulov dismissed the importance of Bagram airbase. Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier warned that leftover U.S. weapons in Afghanistan pose a threat. Pakistan’s defense minister shared similar concerns.
India also reacted. Officials claimed that U.S. weapons were used in a recent attack on tourists. The situation is quickly turning tense.
CPEC Move Challenges Regional Power Balance
The Taliban’s entry into CPEC could impact regional projects like Iran and India’s Chabahar port. The U.S., India, and Iran are expected to oppose this shift. Washington believed the Taliban would avoid aligning with its rivals. That belief now appears wrong.
At the same time, former U.S. President Donald Trump keeps demanding full withdrawal from Afghanistan. He mentions Bagram and U.S. weapons in nearly every speech. Analysts believe Trump may offer Ukraine to Russia in exchange for U.S. influence in Afghanistan. Moscow seems open to the idea.
Veteran Afghan leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar warned of new challenges. He urged unity among Islamists, Mujahideen, and Afghan nationalists. According to him, the country must prepare to face future threats with a united front.
In this rapidly shifting landscape, regional security threats are no longer just warnings. In fact, they have become real and visible. Moreover, each day, these threats evolve and grow stronger.
