The Taliban government has reportedly begun moving troops from Qandahar towards Pakistan’s Chaman border. According to security sources, intercepted communications between Taliban commanders have alerted Pakistani forces to prepare for a possible ground attack along the western frontier. This development has heightened tensions in the already fragile border region, where clashes and cross-border incidents have been frequent in recent years. Pakistan’s security agencies are said to be closely monitoring the situation and reinforcing positions to counter any potential aggression.
A Growing Regional Security Challenge
The movement of Taliban troops towards the border is seen as part of a larger pattern of instability emanating from Afghanistan. Since 2021, Pakistan has documented a sharp rise in terrorist attacks, many traced back to Afghan soil. Groups such as Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) continue to operate freely inside Afghanistan, using border areas like Nangarhar and Kandahar as corridors for cross-border violence. What stands out is that these groups do not appear to pose a serious threat to the ruling authorities in Kabul, yet they remain active against neighboring states. This imbalance raises legitimate concerns about Taliban alignment with anti-Pakistan networks.
