Washington – 26 April 2026: US President Donald Trump remarked on India Pakistan tensions, suggesting both countries will resolve their longstanding disputes independently. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump addressed media questions following the Pahalgam attack.
Trump stated, “They’ve had that fight for 1,000 years in Kashmir.” He added that tensions along the border have existed for 1,500 years. Despite historical inaccuracies, Trump’s comments reflected his characteristic style of exaggeration.
Trump did not offer to mediate the Kashmir dispute this time. India Pakistan tensions escalated after the Pahalgam incident, where 26 civilians lost their lives.
Asked about speaking to the leaders of both countries, Trump said, “They’ll figure it out one way or the other.” He emphasized his close relationship with both India and Pakistan but refrained from proposing mediation.
In July 2019, Trump had claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi requested US mediation on Kashmir. However, India firmly denied that statement.
Following Trump’s 2019 comments, India’s Ministry of External Affairs quickly clarified that no such request was made. India stressed that outstanding issues with Pakistan must be resolved bilaterally under the Shimla Agreement and Lahore Declaration.
During Friday’s remarks, Trump acknowledged the seriousness of the Pahalgam attack. However, he maintained that India and Pakistan would manage their issues independently.
Trump’s decision to avoid repeating a mediation offer was welcomed by India. According to the their statement, Indian officials believe bilateral dialogue, without third-party involvement, is the only acceptable path forward.
The Kashmir conflict between India and Pakistan remains unresolved since 1947. Periodic escalations continue to threaten regional stability.
