WASHINGTON- MARCH,30 – US President Donald Trump has sparked fresh geopolitical debate after stating in an interview with the Financial Times that the United States could “very easily” take control of Iran’s Kharg Island.
According to the Financial Times, Trump suggested that he is considering the possibility of seizing Kharg Island, the key hub through which most of Iran’s oil exports are processed.
The island, located off Iran’s western coast, serves as a critical oil export terminal handling a significant share of the country’s crude shipments through the Persian Gulf.
Trump, when asked about Iran’s defensive capabilities on the strategically important island, said: “I don’t think they have any defence. We could take it very easily.”
The remarks, as reported by the Financial Times, come amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran, with energy infrastructure and maritime routes in the Gulf remaining central to regional security concerns.
Military analysts note that while Kharg Island is heavily fortified and protected by Iranian naval and air defense systems, any direct confrontation could have major consequences for regional stability and global oil markets.
Iranian authorities have not yet issued an official response to the remarks, but the comments are expected to further heighten already strained relations between the two countries.
