ANKARA— A Turkish military cargo plane, identified as a Lockheed “C-130” Hercules, crashed inside Georgian territory on Tuesday near the border with Azerbaijan, Turkish and Georgian authorities confirmed. The aircraft reportedly carried at least 20 military personnel, including the flight crew. The plane had departed from Azerbaijan and was returning to Türkiye when the crash occurred in the Sighnaghi municipality of Georgia’s Kakheti region. Video footage circulating online shows the aircraft spiralling with white smoke trailing before impacting the ground.
Crash Details and Response
According to Turkey’s Ministry of National Defence, which announced its social media channel, the crew lost contact a few minutes after entering Georgian airspace. Georgian authorities confirmed the crash occurred approximately 5 km (3 miles) from the Azerbaijan border.
A coordinated rescue and investigation operation involving Turkish, Georgian, and Azerbaijani teams has been launched. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan described the incident as deeply saddening, referring to those aboard as our martyrs.
Pakistan’s Condolence Message
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan extended its “sincere condolences to the people of Türkiye and the families affected by the tragic crash.”
In a separate message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the crash of the Turkish aircraft in Georgia, offering heartfelt condolences to President Erdoğan, the families of those on board, and the Turkish nation. He added that Pakistan’s “thoughts and prayers are with them.”

The crash underscores the close defence and logistical ties between Türkiye and Azerbaijan, as the aircraft had operated out of Azerbaijan before its final leg to Turkey.
