Utah – A 22-year-old man named Tyler Robinson, a resident of southern Utah, has been charged with the murder of conservative political commentator Charlie Kirk. This arrest came after a stunning confession to one of his relatives and a friend, who notified law enforcement, which resulted in the arrest of the suspect.
Governor Spencer Cox of Utah publicly acknowledged the importance of the move by the family of Robinson, which he said was the “right thing in this case.”
The arrest ends a manhunt that started when Kirk was fatally shot in Orem, Utah. Utah County Attorney Jeffrey Gray will charge Robinson formally on Tuesday. The suspect is in custody in Utah County Jail.

Confession by Robinson
According to the report by Associated Press (AP), the series of circumstances that resulted in the custody of Robinson started when a relative and a family friend visited the local sheriff’s office.
The two men reported to the authorities that Robinson had told them that he was the one who had murdered. After this, Robinson’s father, on identifying his son by the pictures published by the police, urged his son to surrender.
A law enforcement official, who told the AP that he spoke to him on condition of anonymity, said that Robinson initially turned down the request of his father but then changed his mind. The official also reported that the father had contacted a youth pastor who helped in the process of the surrender.
Although Governor Cox did not give any details of whether Robinson was cooperating in the investigation, he praised the tough choice the family had made and that they were instrumental in the case.
A Profile of the Accused
Family histories and official documents paint a complicated picture of the accused. Tyler Robinson’s listed address is his parents’ six-bedroom home in a suburb of St. George, roughly 3.5 hours from Utah Valley University, where the shooting occurred. He is a registered voter in Utah but is not affiliated with a political party and did not cast a ballot in the two most recent general elections.
He is a registered voter in Utah and not a member of a political party, but did not vote in the last two general elections. According to state and federal court records, Robinson has no previous criminal record.
Robinson was a high-achieving student in his academic life. In high school, he was an honor roll student and had a 99th percentile on standardized testing in the whole country. His academic success won him a prestigious scholarship to Utah State University in 2021, but he only studied for a semester.
He is currently a third-year student in the electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College in St. George. One of the church representatives verified that Robinson was initiated into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at a tender age.
In a somber statement following the arrest, Governor Cox expressed the profound shock that has reverberated through the community.
“For the last 33 hours, I had been praying that this person was from another country. That he was not one of us because we are not like that. But it was one of us,” he said.
