The United States has issued a stern warning to Iran over its support for Yemen’s Houthi rebels, holding Tehran responsible for escalating attacks on international shipping lanes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. U.S. accuses Iran support for the Houthis of fueling instability in the region, violating international norms and breaching U.N. Security Council resolutions.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated, “We see your lethal support to the Houthis. We know exactly what you are doing,” emphasizing Washington’s growing frustration with Iran’s regional proxy strategy.

According to a 2024 report by the United Nations Panel of Experts on Yemen, Iran has supplied the Houthis with advanced weapons systems, including Qasef-2K drones, C802 anti-ship missiles, and ballistic missile components. U.S. Navy interdictions in the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Oman have led to the seizure of Iranian-origin arms destined for Houthi forces, including over 4,000 assault rifles, 300 RPGs, and dozens of missile guidance systems in the last year alone.

In response to the growing threat to maritime security, the United States launched Operation Prosperity Guardian in December 2023, involving over a dozen countries including the United Kingdom, France, and Japan. The coalition aims to ensure the safety of international shipping in the Red Sea. Despite these efforts, Houthi attacks have persisted, forcing major shipping companies such as Maersk and MSC to reroute their vessels around the Cape of Good Hope, significantly increasing delivery times and logistical costs.

The U.S. military has conducted more than 35 airstrikes on Houthi infrastructure in Yemen since January 2024. These operations, according to the Pentagon, are defensive in nature and aligned with international law to protect global maritime commerce.

While Iran denies direct involvement, U.S. officials cite intelligence indicating that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force plays a critical role in supporting and directing Houthi operations. U.S. accuses Iran support not only of arming the rebels but of emboldening a broader proxy strategy that threatens regional stability. Analysts caution that continued Iranian-backed aggression may prompt Washington to escalate its military response beyond Yemen.

With tensions rising, the message from Washington underscores a strategic pivot toward holding Tehran directly accountable for its regional activities.
